Brown or White Rock Salt – what’s the difference?

By far the most common question we are asked when discussing Rock Salt with our customers is “What’s the difference between the Brown and the White Rock Salt?”. In terms of actual performance, the difference is actually minimal. Both products perform the same function – preventing and reducing ice and snow build ups -  to the same standard. However, as the two products come from different sources, and are mined differently, there are some fundamental differences between the  two.

.Both products do the job, and it is purely personal preference whether you go for the White or the Brown Rock Salt. If aesthetics aren’t important, go for the cheaper, Brown Rock Salt. If they are, then pay a little more for the White Rock Salt.

Brown Rock Salt (often also called grit) is mined – usually from within the UK – inland from underground salt deposits. The Rock Salt has collected other impurities and minerals over the millions of years it has been underground, leading to its distinctive brown colour. These impurities get left behind when the salt dissolves the ice, leaving a brown residue that will wash away.

Some people see this residue as an advantage as it means you can tell which areas/paths have been salted in icy conditions (think black ice!). It is also cheaper than White Rock Salt as it does not need to be imported. Other people are less keen and think it unsightly, especially as it means the residue can end up being walked inside onto carpets!

White Rock Salt comes from two sources. Some of it comes from salt pans from countries such as Spain, Egypt and Italy. Sea water is evaporated, leaving behind the pure Rock Salt deposits which is then harvested. Other White Rock Salt is mined in a similar way to the Brown Rock Salt, but after mining the impurities within the Rock Salt are removed, leaving a more pure (but more expensive) product.

Being more pure, little or no visible residue is left when using White Rock Salt, which makes it especially useful where cleanliness is an issue. However, it can make it tricky to tell which areas have been salted, so you may have more difficulty finding a safe path!
